The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. Evolutionary biology is partly based on paleontology , which uses the fossil record to answer questions about the mode and tempo of evolution, 57 and partly on the developments in areas such as population genetics 58 In the 1980s, developmental biology re-entered evolutionary biology after its initial exclusion from the modern synthesis through the study of evolutionary developmental biology 59 Phylogenetics , systematics , and taxonomy are related fields often considered part of evolutionary biology.
The environmental studies and environmental science majors examine environmental challenges faced by humans from an array of perspectives, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, economics, engineering, geography, geology, history and philosophy. All students are encouraged to participate in an independent study or Honors project, in which you can work closely with a member of the biology faculty on a research topic.

Biology as a separate science was developed in the nineteenth century, as scientists discovered that organisms shared fundamental characteristics. Microbiology is made up of several sub-disciplines, including: bacteriology (the study of bacteria), mycology (the study of fungi), phycology (the study of algae), parasitology (the study of parasites), and virology (the study of viruses, and how they function inside cells) 1.
