The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. Evolutionary biology is partly based on paleontology , which uses the fossil record to answer questions about the mode and tempo of evolution, 57 and partly on the developments in areas such as population genetics 58 In the 1980s, developmental biology re-entered evolutionary biology after its initial exclusion from the modern synthesis through the study of evolutionary developmental biology 59 Phylogenetics , systematics , and taxonomy are related fields often considered part of evolutionary biology.

The environmental studies and environmental science majors examine environmental challenges faced by humans from an array of perspectives, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, economics, engineering, geography, geology, history and philosophy. All students are encouraged to participate in an independent study or Honors project, in which you can work closely with a member of the biology faculty on a research topic.

A course in biological sciences will combine practical and theory work with a mixture of lectures, seminars and lab work. Our Biology program is versatile, allowing you to complement your Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy courses with studies from the arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics areas. The Department, like the discipline, is diverse, offering both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to study living systems at the level of genes and proteins to entire ecosystems.

Biology as a separate science was developed in the nineteenth century, as scientists discovered that organisms shared fundamental characteristics. Microbiology is made up of several sub-disciplines, including: bacteriology (the study of bacteria), mycology (the study of fungi), phycology (the study of algae), parasitology (the study of parasites), and virology (the study of viruses, and how they function inside cells) 1. These broad areas encompass a number of specific fields.

Our scientific expertise spans the realm of biological sciences to drive advances in medicine and healthcare, biotechnology, education, and public policy. Biological science as done in the laboratory is so much more complicated than Wason’s test systems that it’s certainly fair to question the relevance of simple card tricks played on unsuspecting undergraduate students on what educated people in white coats do in the lab.

Molecular biology is the study of biology at the molecular level. Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. AIMS AND SCOPE OF JOURNAL: The Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, in publication since 1985, covers the most significant developments in the field of cell and developmental biology, including structure, function, and organization of the cell, development and evolution of the cell as it relates to single and multicellular organisms, and models and tools of molecular biology.

It gave me a year to focus on my skills in bioinformatics and computational biology and to hone my specific research interests before beginning my Ph.D. Through the program, I spent a year splitting my time between learning, teaching, and conducting research, which helped convince me that I would be comfortable continuing to learn, teach, and conduct research during my Ph.D. and beyond. These Institutes bring faculty from Biology and other departments with biological interests into contiguous lab space.

The fields within biology are further divided based on the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the fundamental chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interrelate.

As a result of the inclusion of evolution, often as an undergirding theme, in widely used textbooks like the Biological Sciences and Curriculum Study (the ‘BSCS’) a new generation of students received their primary biological training with a view that evolutionary biology was a foundational science in the biological sciences (Smocovitis, 1996). The major groups of living things are animals , plants , fungi , protists , bacteria , and archaea Biology studies their structure, function, distribution, evolution, and taxonomy.

All of these tools for state-of-the-art molecular and integrative biology research — as well as opportunities to do field research on our University farm and in the lush environment around campus — will be available to you as an undergraduate student.
